Stand up and stay healthy

You have a sedentary job, do you sit all day? Do you find yourself sitting more when working from home than at the office? After work, do you spend most of your free time sitting and watching TV, playing on your phone, or playing video games?
Here are good reasons to get off the chair or get off the couch right away.

We like to think that we are a standing species. After all, this is what drove our evolutionary process away from many of our quadrupedal ancestors. But the reality is that wherever we go, we are invited to sit down. In the car, on the subway, while we eat, at the office, at home — even while waiting for our annual check-up. But all this hospitality may not be so good for our bodies.

Sitting for long periods of time is bad for your health

A growing body of research shows that just standing -- even if you're not walking around -- can have health benefits. A recent Australian study found that participants who spent more time standing and moving during the week had lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels, based on sensitive monitors attached to their thighs. For those who walked more steps during the day, the benefits were even greater, including reductions in body mass index and waist circumference.
The study's researchers boiled their findings down to a simple message: "Stand up, sit less, move more."
While research has shown very clearly the health benefits of not sitting, we are just beginning to understand that standing alone may be a good choose. Lopez-Jimenez wrote an editorial accompanying the study in the European Heart Journal.
"The reason standing may be good is that when we stand, we have a lot of muscles in our legs, hips, and abs that are working hard to keep you standing," he said, adding that standing regularly can reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

If you want to develop good habits for life, don't start at the gym. Start with the office.

Support your work

Standing desks are all the rage, and they're an easy way to squeeze more vertical time into your day.
Adding one to your workspace doesn't have to be a big investment. Hedge recommends starting with a low-tech setup and seeing if you like it: "Three pieces of wood, like a bench (on your table), and you have your platform. If it works, you can spend Hundreds of dollars in one," he said.
There are many adjustable desks that can help make the transition between standing and sitting seamless. They range from electronic to pneumatic, and slide up and down similar to how adjustable chairs work.
"Whatever it is, it has to be easy to use and fast, and if you can't adjust it easily, you're not going to use it," Hedge said. Give it a try—some electronic ones are slow, noisy, and power-hungry, while pneumatic ones are hard to tune, he points out.

The FEZiBO standing desk was born under the idea of minimal design in pursuit of maximum comfort. Minimize design and maximize comfort.
The electric standing desk uses a practical and eco-friendly table top, the one-piece design makes assembly easier and the table top is more sturdy. By offering up to 8 colors and 4 sizes, you can design your desk to your liking to get the perfect desk for your daily work and life. Best of all, the laminate withstands pressure well, is eco-friendly and affordable. Eco-friendly and durable bamboo table tops support sustainable consumption and production patterns. Bamboo's unique texture is a gift from nature, leading us to embrace nature. Calm down, slow down, and enjoy a life-work balance.

Structured exercise is essential for optimal health. But you should also stand and move around a lot during the day, especially if you have an office job. Sitting for hours on end can increase your risk of serious diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. By contrast, you can reduce your risk of all of these diseases by standing and moving more, even if you're already exercising. That's because regular exercise during the day increases these benefits.

So what can you do to reduce the amount of time you spend sitting throughout the day?

1. Invest in a standing computer desk or one that allows you to change the height of the desk so you can alternate between standing and sitting while you work.
2. The rhythm of the call. If you have room to move around, do so. Otherwise, march in place.
3. Squat down or lift your toes while reading your email. Or at least, stand instead of sitting.
Exercise regularly and rest. Set a reminder to get up from your chair and move for at least 5 minutes every hour.
4. Stretch often. You can do this in a chair, or stand up and really stretch your body and get your blood flowing.
5. Take a walk at lunch. You can do this whether you are in the office or working from home.
6. Do something positive at the end of the job. Instead of hanging out on the couch, play with your kids or dog. Instead of sitting down and flipping through your phone, go outside and talk to your neighbors (with social distancing, of course).
7. Don’t think that your morning run or after-get off work trip to the gym will give you a license to sit for the rest of the day.
8. The recommended 30 minutes or more of exercise per day does not make up for the time you spend on the homeless.
9. Anytime you can stand up and move instead of sitting, even if it's only a few minutes at a time, you'll be good for your body

Whether you need to stand up for work all day or choose to use a stand up desk, proper posture and stretching will help counteract the discomfort that can arise from prolonged standing. Having the right posture keeps the joints properly aligned and prevents muscle fatigue, while stretching and yoga can help improve circulation and reduce pain. The most important point is that the human body is designed to move. Like exercise, standing requires variety and proper form to keep your body fit.
